Ozgur Ozturk Design Manifest 20/3/2006 “Design borns with another design” Today's world, visual bombardments, information overloads*, perfect models, perfect illusionic designs* are similar with the coffin-like lifestyle of Art-Noveau. Think about Design Hotels which already had explored the roads you have to go.. Think about Design Hotels which had solved all the questions already for you.. Think about Design Hotels which had accomplished all the meanings and aims of our lives without anything we do. Are those hotels the last point of us getting betrayed by pleasure? Design hotels, perfect models, perfect designed tested and approved cars, smart houses, computers working faster than our brains and the things which are mashing our existences are pushing the existence of human to a big absurdity. Imagine an individual person who wakes up early with a designed alarm sound, dealing with the typography of microwave, heating his food, watching the morning news on television, taking the daily information from newspapers and going on road with his designed car, going to his workplace with focusing his attention on traffic signs, looking at the stranger billboard advertisings on traffic with a companionship of an always-talking radio, getting online with computer, facing the flowing news, raining messages and even sometimes passing whole night in here, using mobile phone, listening discman, mp3 player or ipod. Lets name this individual person as “Özgür”. Everything in Özgür's life is designed and made for FACILITATING his own life. Is it possible to get drowned inside this “facility” ? Imagine a person getting drowned inside his suit. The organic lines and his face inside the suit is “Normal and Ugly” for his environment which had been designed and finished. Must be hidden. “Normal and Ugly” like it doesnt belong to there. For these rules, like there is no any woman without complexes, there is no any man without deficiency. The perfect human life models, perfect human models which we generally see on commercials are showing us that none of us are OKAY and all we have some deficiency, again, again and again.. For these rules, “Beautiful and Normal” design is ideal, maybe ordinary but valid. “Beautiful and Abnormal” is attractive, valid and interesting. Rest is just invalid and ugly. Özgür's life is surrounded with Beautiful items which are seperated as Normal and Abnormal. The one who is taken as Ugly and Normal is himself and actually everybody around is mashed, ugly and ordinary (normal) individuals for the communication world around them. There is nothing human can do left. Computers are already thinking faster than us, designs are already perfect, everything presented are working for beautificating us more and giving message like “You are ugly but if you use this design or this product you can be normal and beautiful like everybody”. The only way to be got saved from the accumulation which got mashed under the “beautiful” bombardment is being “Ugly and Abnormal” relating to this logic. My approach to design and typography is connected with my tendency to create ugly and abnormal works. o Beautiful and Normal - valid o Beautiful and Abnormal - valid o Ugly and Normal - invalid o Ugly and Abnormal - invalid For this logic, Im ugly and abnormal. Explanations: o * Information Overload: Its a syndrome generally goes out with the oxtreme usage of internet. Its not taken so important in scientific areas yet. Side effects are generally, over anxiety, confused mind, inability to take decision, inability to control nerves, disfunctioned judgement, decreasing in well-being of the character. * Perfect Illusionic designs, (for ex. iTunes visual effects) Those are perfect graphic designs with zero mistakes in it which are hypnotisingly effective and what the most important in this is that all are being presented to you via computer
